Date: Sunday November 15th – 1pm to 5pm
Do you have a collection of silver scraps sitting at your bench? Instead of letting it pile up, learn how to turn it back into usable metal.
In this hands on workshop, you’ll learn how to recycle scrap silver and transform it into fresh sheet and wire that can be used in future jewellery projects.
With the cost of precious metals continuing to rise, learning how to reclaim and reuse your silver is an incredibly valuable skill for any jewellery maker. We’ll walk through the recycling process step by step; from sorting and preparing your scrap to melting, pouring, rolling and forming it into new material.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have a better understanding of how to manage your silver scrap and the confidence to start recycling your own metal at the bench.
Is this workshop right for me?
This workshop is suitable for students that have worked with a torch before.
You don’t need previous experience melting or recycling silver. We’ll cover the process from the beginning, with demonstrations and plenty of hands-on guidance along the way.
If you make jewellery and have ever wondered what to do with all those little pieces of leftover silver, this workshop is for you!
If you don’t have access to a rolling mill, we will also cover low tech solutions for making your own wire without a rolling mill.
What will I learn?
During the workshop, we’ll cover:
- How to identify and sort different types of silver
- What silver can and shouldn’t be melted together
- How to prepare and season a crucible
- How to prepare your scrap for melting
- Safe torch techniques for melting silver
- What tools will you need to create wire / sheet – Low Tech & High Tech options
- How to pour molten silver
- How to prepare your newly melted silver for further working
- Rolling your silver into sheet
- Forming and drawing your silver into wire
- Tips for storing and managing scrap for future recycling
You’ll first watch demonstrations and learn the fundamentals of the recycling process before moving on to working with your own silver.
The goal isn’t simply to melt your scrap — it’s to learn how to turn it back into useful material you can take to the bench and make jewellery with again.
What should I bring?
If you have sterling silver scrap, bring it with you! This can include offcuts, wire, sheet and other suitable pieces left over from your jewellery projects.
If you have old silver jewellery you’d like to recycle, please contact us before the workshop. Not every piece of jewellery is suitable for melting as-is, particularly pieces containing solder, stones, unknown metals or plated components.

A 2” crucible and quick pour handle is included with your workshop. You’ll learn how to season and prepare it during class, and it’s yours to take home for future silver recycling.
What to wear
For your safety, long hair must be tied back, closed-toe shoes are required, and loose or flowing clothing should be avoided.
Please bring your reading glasses if you use them for close up work.
